    • “The education I received from AAPT was priceless. I had been out of a formal learning environment for 8 years, and AAPT instilled the belief that I could not only learn new material, but apply it to my career. I wouldn’t be where I am if not for AAPT and their faculty. Thank you so much.”

Tips for Pursuing a Career Focused on Fitness

    Last updated 6 years ago

Careers in the fitness or personal training world are great choices for many individuals. People who enjoy fitness and physical training truly love their work in these fields, and the perks are great too. Here are some tips for you to keep in mind if you are pursuing a career focused on fitness.

    • Learn as much as you can. Take classes from an accredited school in subjects like anatomy, physiology, kinesiology, bio-mechanics, cellular biology, nutrition, and basic healthcare. Don't forget classes that will help you learn about the people you will be assisting, such as pediatrics, geriatrics, or sports medicine courses.
    • Earn certifications. Basic certifications like CPR and first aid are crucial to fitness-related careers. If your job will take you to a pool for work, then a lifeguard basics class is also a good idea. Obtaining these certifications before you search for a job as a personal trainer or fitness trainer will make you more valuable to a prospective employer.
    • Become a certified instructor. Look for classes or exams that will give you professional certifications in the field that most interests you. If you want to teach yoga or Pilates, then become a certified instructor. If you are pursuing the sports field, then try the American Council of Exercise or the National Strength and Conditioning Association.
    • Practice healthy fitness habits yourself. Make sure you are in good physical shape and that you eat a nutritious diet. You want your clients to trust you, so lead by example and follow the same advice you teach; your clients will view you as reliable and knowledgeable.

The most important thing to remember about choosing a career in personal training or fitness is that you need certifications from an accredited school. The American Academy of Personal Training offers all the classes and physical education you need to be successful. Contact us today for more information.

What to Look for in a Personal Training Certification Program | Personal Trainer Certification New York

    Last updated 6 years ago

When you are on the road to become a personal trainer, one of the most important aspects of your education is earning your certification. Choosing the right personal training certification program is very important. This article will examine some of the features to look for in a certification program.

    • Find an accredited program. This is the most important thing to consider. If the program is not accredited, then it doesn't matter how much time you spend studying or what you learn from the program—your diploma or certification won't mean much to your potential employers.
    • Keep desired career paths in mind. Look at which gyms or fitness centers prefer the certification you will be receiving. If you are set on working at a specific place, then you don't want to waste time and effort on a certification your desired employer doesn't feature. Do your research and make sure you go to a personal training or fitness school that will give you exactly what you need for the career you want.
    • Find schools that help with job placement. Find information on the percentage of graduates who find jobs in related fields, and see how many are still employed after several years. Talk to prospective employers to learn if they prefer the training one school provides over another school's curriculum.
    • Consider a program that teaches general life skills. Check if the certification program offers other resources to help you in the future. Basic business, bookkeeping, and finance classes might be available. Also, organization skills and resources can help you run your own business or make you a more valuable asset to your employer.

    Dear Dr. Steve,

Lately, a lot of celebrities have come forward about being bipolar. I, myself, go through mood swings and depression as well. Could I be bipolar too?

"Dana bipolar disorder affects about 3 to 5 percent of the population.  It causes mood swings that vary from the lows of depression to the highs of mania.  These mood swings can occur a few times a year.. Or several times a day.  Many of us go through mood swings..but with bipolar disorder, they`re usually more extreme.  If your mood swings are disrupting your life.. Causing you problems at work or with your family, it may be time to see a doctor.  The good news is that bipolar disorder can be successfully treated with medication and counseling.  If left untreated, it can potentially lead to substance abuse, legal problems, personal problems, financial trouble and poor work performance."
