Cavities in kids may not only be caused by sugar. Researchers say a newly identified bacterium may be to blame. It's called scardovia wiggsiae and it was discovered in the mouths of kids who get severe early childhood cavities when strep wasn't identified. Early cavities in children can destroy primary teeth, cause painful infections and even lead to hospital visits. Experts say the tooth decay is caused by an interaction between the bacteria and a carbohydrate diet that contains a large amount of sugar. So sugar is still bad for your teeth. Researchers say this may offer a new target for the treatment of cavities in kids, but you still have to watch the sugar, and you still have to brush.
