4 Tips for Preparing for a Career as a Personal Trainer

Last updated 6 years ago

Personal training is a growing field with new jobs and specialization areas that continue to develop. As you prepare for your career as a personal trainer, know what to expect out of the job. Keep a positive outlook as you go into the field and consider the following tips as you begin your career:

  1. Be Adaptable: Personal trainers work in a variety of environments varying from client’s homes to gyms and health clubs. You may work indoors or outdoors, so remain flexible to a changing work environment.
  2. Remain Confident: As a personal trainer, you are in a position of leadership. You may be responsible for one client at a time or a group of people in a class. Even when you start out as a trainer, having confidence in yourself as a trainer and as a leader is key to your success.
  3. Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle: You are the example for your clients, so staying fit and healthy is a big part of your job as a trainer. Don’t just diet, but develop a life plan for eating right and exercising daily. Your clients look to you for inspiration and motivation, so show them the good habits you want them to learn.
  4. Plan Your Career Path: Know what certification you want to get and consider picking a specialty for the type of training you want to do. Think about where you want to work and know what you have to do to get there. If you have specific goals in mind, it will be easier to achieve them.
