Tips for Pursuing a Career Focused on Fitness

Last updated 6 years ago

Careers in the fitness or personal training world are great choices for many individuals. People who enjoy fitness and physical training truly love their work in these fields, and the perks are great too. Here are some tips for you to keep in mind if you are pursuing a career focused on fitness.

  • Learn as much as you can. Take classes from an accredited school in subjects like anatomy, physiology, kinesiology, bio-mechanics, cellular biology, nutrition, and basic healthcare. Don't forget classes that will help you learn about the people you will be assisting, such as pediatrics, geriatrics, or sports medicine courses.
  • Earn certifications. Basic certifications like CPR and first aid are crucial to fitness-related careers. If your job will take you to a pool for work, then a lifeguard basics class is also a good idea. Obtaining these certifications before you search for a job as a personal trainer or fitness trainer will make you more valuable to a prospective employer.
  • Become a certified instructor. Look for classes or exams that will give you professional certifications in the field that most interests you. If you want to teach yoga or Pilates, then become a certified instructor. If you are pursuing the sports field, then try the American Council of Exercise or the National Strength and Conditioning Association.
  • Practice healthy fitness habits yourself. Make sure you are in good physical shape and that you eat a nutritious diet. You want your clients to trust you, so lead by example and follow the same advice you teach; your clients will view you as reliable and knowledgeable.

The most important thing to remember about choosing a career in personal training or fitness is that you need certifications from an accredited school.
